CHAPTER EIGHT
VIOLET WOKE, INSTINCTIVELY AWARE something wasnât quite right. Behind her Romanâs breathing was irregular and his body tense. He made a soundâalmost a chokeâand his big body flinched. This was no restful sleep.
âRoman?â Gently she put her hand on his shoulder and felt the blazing heat of his skin. âRoman?â
He jerked, instantly awake. âDid I wake you? Sorry. Restless sleeper.â
She rolled towards him, wishing she could see his face, but the light in the carriage wasnât bright enough. âThat was a little more than restless.â
He slid out of the bed. âWork stress. Sorry. Go back to sleep. Iâm going to get this stuff done while Iâm thinking of it.â
âBut itâs...â She raised up and pushed the button to illuminate her watch. âNot even four in the morning.â
âYeah, you go back to sleep.â
Violet paused. He was avoiding talking to her about whatever the hell had been going on in his head. His uneven breathing was still audible but now wasnât the time to push it. Sheâd broach it later.
But later on in the morning, while she ate pastries for breakfast, Roman kept his focus firmly on his computer screen. Feeling fidgety, she explored the compartment and discovered a hidden cupboard in which there were some beautiful hardbound books and intricately carved games and puzzles.
âThey thought of everything on this train,â she murmured with delight.
He glanced up and watched her carry a couple of puzzle boxes to the small table by her comfy arm chair. She went with solitaire first.
Ten minutes later, Roman finally spoke. âYouâre good at that.â
âIâm good at entertaining myself alone for long periods of time,â she said lightly.
His lips twisted in a rueful smile. âWhat other games are there?â
âChess, of course. And checkers. Do you know how to play?â
âNeither, Iâm afraid.â
âShall I teach you?â
He leaned back in his chair. âHow do you know how to play if you were always entertaining yourself alone?â
âI spun the board and played against myself.â
âOh?â He looked arch. âWhat else did you do to entertain yourself alone?â
She shot a look at his saucy tone and felt that delicious warmth deep inside. âI painted my nails and I plaited my hair. And Iâm not joking. I mastered all sorts of cool styles with my wigs.â She leaned forward. âBut I donât like that I have to play by myself now.â
He opened his arms. âCome play with me, then.â
Finally. She sauntered over to him and straddled his lap. Looking deep into his eyes, she saw that lingering tiredness. Heâd been awake for hours.
âI think you need to go to bed.â She brushed her lips against his.
âYou think?â
âI know.â
âOnly if you come with me.â
âOh, I intend to. Repeatedly.â
He chuckled and stood, lifting her easily. Violet wriggled and wrapped around him in delight. This chemistry they had... She was beginning to think it had an eternal source of fuel.
